TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia sits on the Pacific ring of fire which has shown an increased amount of activities in recent days. The following are a string of five natural disasters that struck Indonesian regions recently.

1. Earthquake and Tsunami Struck Palu and Donggala

A magnitude 7.4 tectonic earthquake shook the region of Central Sulawesi and caused major damages in Palu and Donggala on Friday, September 28. The earthquake was followed by a tsunami that wiped the coastline areas in Palu’s Talise Beach and Donggala which killed at least 1,424 people.

2. Magnitude 6.3 and 5.3 Earthquakes Hit East Sumba

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a string of earthquakes struck the region of East Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara, on October 2. The earthquake’s shallow hypocenter was at the depth of 10 kilometers.

3. Mount Anak Krakatoa Eruption

The mountain that is located at Sunda Straight, South Lampung, first surfaced in 1927 after the frighteningly devastating eruption of its “mother” Mount Krakatoa in 1883. This mountain steadily spewed ash and produced tremors since August and recently spewed lava.

4. Mount Soputan Eruption

The mountain located in North Sulawesi first erupted on Wednesday, October 3, and spewed 4,000-meter high volcanic ash cloud. The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) highly suspects that the Central Sulawesi earthquake had sparked Soputan to erupt.

5. Mount Gamalama Eruption

PVMBG reported that North Maluku’s Mount Gamalama erupted and produced a 250-meter high ash cloud on Thursday, October 4. Local government announced that the mountain’s status is on Alert Level II.
