TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - In the biennial Xin Philanthropy Conference, Alibaba Group co-founder and executive chairman Jack Ma explained that being generous is not just about money.

“Charity is about how much you donate, but public service is about giving one’s time, actions and heart. It is a passion and force that come from within,” said Ma in a written statement on Wednesday, September 5.

The philanthropy conference was held by Alibaba Foundation, a private foundation founded by Alibaba Group that was held for nine days since September 1, which sought to generate 300 million philanthropy actions from the community that comprised Alibaba ecosystem users.

The conference was first held in 2016, which was founded to push for an inclusive and universal growth that supported a sustainable business, a belief that the Alibaba Group deems substantial and represents the group’s commitment.

Small or large contributions, said Ma, were not an issue since it did not take major acts of philanthropy to be a person in significance. More than 1,000 participants have aligned in China and for the first time in India to unite the world’s known pioneers and organizations.

This event also highlighted several social matters, including education, and presented young leaders and environmental experts from across the globe to share their experiences in leading a social grassroot movement.
