State Pays Rp1.6bn to Compensate 17 Terror Victims

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Witness and Victims Protection Agency (LPSK) gave Rp1.6 billion to 17 victims and victims' family members of three terror acts; the Thamrin bombing, the Kampung Melayu bombing, and the series of bomb attacks in North Sumatra Police post. The money is given to worth of compensate the victims for their losses.
The compensation money was given by Coordinating Minister for Politics, Law and Security Wiranto accompanied by LPSK chairman Abdul Haris Semendawai.
"The money cannot replace what the victims have lost, but we hope that this will show that the government's earnestness in their concern for the victims," Wiranto said during his address at the Jakarta LPSK Building on Thursday, September 6.
Meanwhile, Haris said the compensation for the victims was granted by the panel of judges who lead the terror cases' trials. "Thank God, the victims' efforts to seek for damages were granted by the judges," he said.
This compensation, Haris added, shows that the criminal justice system aims not only to punish criminals, but also help victims secure their rights, including compensation.
"We hope that the state and justice system's attention to victims' can help motivate and encourage victims to rebuild their lives," he said.
