TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - International media highlighted the prison riot at the Police`s Mobile Brigade Headquarter or Mako Brimob, Kelapa Dua, Depok that allegedly associated with the Islamic State or ISIS group. On late Tuesday, May 8, terrorist prisoners broke out a riot and seized the guards’ weapons. The riot ended after two-day standoff by anti-terrorism squad Densus 88.

Several international media assumed that ISIS was behind the prison riot because ISIS media, Amaq News Agency, reported the news right after the incident took place. In addition, it uploaded a propaganda video inside the prison.

As New York Times cited, most of the prisoners in Mako Brimob detention center are pro-ISIS. It stated the Islamic State’s propaganda arm uploaded videos and photos pledging allegiance to the group’s leader in Iraq and Syria, Abu Bakar Al-Baghdadi, and also showing the black flag of the ISIS.

Meanwhile, Wahington Post and Daily Telegraph also touched on the role of ISIS group behind the riot. However, those international media have not further confirmed yet whether the ISIS group in Syria instructed the riot or not.

Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Wiranto stated 155 prisoners in Mako Brimob riot surrendered without resistance.

“The officers issued the ultimatum, not negotiation,” Wiranto asserted, clarifying earlier police’s statement today, May 10, at Mako Brimob, Kelapa Dua, Depok.
