TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Fishery and Maritime Affairs Minister Susi Pudjiastuti asked the Indonesian fishermen to be thankful to President Jokowi`s commitment for realizing a sovereign Indonesian maritime exclusively for its fishermen.

“It’s Jokowi with all of his complete commitment in making Indonesia’s seas a sovereign entity, purely for Indonesian fishermen and fisheries,” said Minister Susi Pudjiastuti at the State Palace today, May 8.

According to Susi, the president’s commitment could be seen when the former Solo Mayor formed a task force dedicated on taking action against foreign fishing boats that have stolen Indonesia’s fish resources and the ease of obtaining permits for fishing vessels that are technically under 10 gross-ton (GT).

The permits for ships that weigh 10-30 GT will be consolidated with provincial governments while permits for ships that weigh over 30 GT will be handled online.

Minister Susi also said that the government has provided an insurance dedicated to Indonesian fishermen. “It will be fully paid by the government,” she maintained.

Furthermore, Minister Susi Pudjiastuti said that fishery export value has shown a 5 percent increase during this year’s first quarter compared to last year. “This shows an improvement of the fishermen's catches,” she said.
