TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - West Sumatra`s Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) deemed that the rampant spread of LGBT is caused by society`s permissive behavior.

“People tend to be apathetic when they witness this phenomenon as long as the perpetrator is not their relatives. This attitude continues to thrive the LGBT movement,” said Gusrizal Gazahar West Sumatra’s MUI Chairman today, April 24.

Furthermore, Gusrizal grouped the people he considers as those who do the LGBT practices into three categories; those who view LGBT as an ideology, the LGBT 'victims', and the 'potential victims'.

He even went as far as urging ideological LGBTs to be publically announced to avoid new victims, said Gusrizal. “These ideological people are actively spreading their behaviors. Society should not stand still and let that happen,” he said.

Previously, a study conducted by the Indonesian VCT and HIV AIDS Counselor Association in West Sumatra found that sexual relationships between gay men are the main cause of the HIV spread in the region.

“Based on the records from the Health Ministry, there are 10,376 HIV cases from January to March 2018,” said the group’s counselor Khaterina Welong.

Khaterina predicts that West Sumatra has 14,469 gay men and 2,501 transvestites whose 'customers' double that number. However, West Sumatra Governor Irwan Prayitno said that the data needs to be clarified as it is mainly a rough estimate.
