Jokowi Hands Over 3,000 Land Certificates in Jayapura

TEMPO.CO, Jayapura - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) today gave 3,331 land certificates to the people of Papua. The occasion took place at the office of Jayapura Gunung Merah Sentani Regent in Jayapura, Papua.


"This certificate is a proof our legal rights to the land that we own," Jokowi said, April 11.


According to Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning Minister Sofyan Djalil, 2,058 people were present to receive the certificates.

Jokowi also said that he had ordered his minister to speed up the process of providing these land certificates in all provinces of Indonesia.


The president also suggested pawning the certificates as a way of investing. But he reminded the people to be careful when using land certificates as collateral to get loans from banks—making sure they can afford to pay the monthly installment.


In addition to Sofyan Djalil, Jokowi came to Papua with first lady Iriana, Minister of State Secretary Pratikno, as well as a number of other ministers and state officials.
