TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry confirmed that the family of the late Adelina Jemirah will be compensated. The migrant worker from East Nusa Tenggara became a victim of her employer’s abusive treatments in Penang, Malaysia.

In between her schedule at the ‘Indonesia-Philippine Workshop on Islamic Education Cooperation’, Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi explained that one of the teams from the Indonesian Consulate General in Penang has contacted the agent that employed Adelina as a migrant worker in Malaysia.

The consulate general said the migrant worker agency has agreed to pay the compensation to Adelina’s family. “We have received the compensation, we’ll just have to wait for the post-mortem result to decide when will her body be sent back to Indonesia,” said Retno on February 14, 2018.

Minister Retno further said that Malaysian authorities have taken considerable steps to handle this case.

Adelina died on Sunday, February 11, which was just one day after a rescue team discovered her in a poor health condition with numerous injuries throughout her body. She was also forced to sleep on the porch accompanied by the employer’s pet dog.

Authorities arrested the mother of Adelina’s employer, who allegedly abused her, on Monday, February 12. She will be charged with Article 302 of the criminal code with the maximum penalty of death row.
