TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia ranked third in corruption perceptions index (CPI) among ASEAN member states, said the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) chief Agus Rahardjo.

“Our perceptions index is heading in the right direction as we can show real improvements,” Agus said in an event commemorating International Anti-Corruption Day in Jakarta.

Agus said that Indonesia ranked better than it did in 1999. The country stood in the bottom of the index in ASEAN during the so-called New Order era with 17 points out of 100. Indonesia now ranked above the Philippines and Thailand.

Singapore attains the first positions among ASEAN member states. Agus said that there is nothing special about Singapore’s achievement since the country’s anti-graft agency was established in 1952, whereas the KPK was only formed in 2002.

On the occasion, Agus also highlighted the Indonesian Corruption Law which he said is far from perfect. The KPK chief said that the law is out of date as it only covers state funds. He added that bribery also took place in the private sector.

President Joko Widodo believes that Indonesia is one of the most active nations to enforce the anti-corruption law.
