21 killed in flooding and landslide disasters
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho explained that the cyclone Cempaka hit 28 Indonesian regions throughout November 27-29. The cyclone caused extreme rainstorms and high tides throughout Java Island’s southern coast.
“Imagine a month’s worth of rain dropped at once from the sky, it is certainly that rivers and drainage system would not be able to contain it,” said Sutopo in a press release on Thursday, November 30. Cyclone Cempaka killed at least 27 people with thousands of houses and farmlands submerged by the massive floods.
BNPD detected that the tropical cyclone Cempaka has started to leave areas in Indonesia and will not cause further problems. However, the agency suggested that there is an early warning for another tropical cyclone that is closing-in, cyclone Dahlia.
Cyclone Dahlia is expected to be over the southeastern part of the Indian Ocean with a wind speed of 95 kilometers per hour maximum. BNPB warns the public to remain alert for further extreme conditions.
