TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said the extreme weather events hitting the Java and Bali regions within the past two days were the effects caused by the tropical cyclone Cempaka.
According to the BNPB's Head of Information and Public Relation Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, the tropical cyclone Cempaka has caused several areas in Java and Bali affected by flood, landslide, and tornado.
“The extreme weather events have caused floods, landslides, and tornados in 21 regencies/cities in Java and Bali islands,” he said in a written statement received by Tempo yesterday, Nov. 28.

BNPB recorded that the regions affected by the cyclone include Situbondo, Sidoarjo, Pacitan, Wonogiri, Ponorogo, Serang, Sukabumi, Purworejo, Tulungagung, Semarang, Klaten, Malang, Wonosobo, Klungkung, Yogyakarta, Gunung Kidul, Kulon Progo, Sleman, Bantul, Kudus, and Sukoharjo.
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) had previously announced an early warning of tropical cyclone Cempaka's occurrence in around Pacitan Province, East Jawa. On Tuesday, the speed of the cyclone reached 65 kilometers per hour.
Sutopo expected the extreme weather would continue until Wednesday, Nov. 29. Therefore, his office called on the people to remain alert for the possibility of flooding, landslide, and tornado. “It is expected that the tropical cyclone Cempaka will leave the Indonesian regions on Wednesday. However, the Java and Bali area will still be affected by the heavy rain and high wave,” he said.
