Pribumi Term Cited by Anies Baswedan a Slip of Tongue: Magnis

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Culture expert Franz Magnis Suseno viewed the word pribumi (native Indonesian) mentioned by Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan during his inaugural speech was a slip of the tongue.
“I think it was just a slip of the tongue, as long as it does not happen again,” said Magnis on Wednesday, October 18.
The inaugural speech spawned various responses from the public. Anies Baswedan mentioned the word pribumi in a part of his speech which is considered to bring a primordial sentiment and politicized identity.
The use of the term pribumi has been banned specifically under the Presidential Instruction No. 26/1998.
Magnis reminded that it is still acceptable if it does not reoccur and that serious questions must be asked if happens again in the future. “[It is tolerable] if it's a one-time event,” said Magnis. He continued to explain that native and non-native terms are not included in the Indonesian language anymore.
Father Magnis said that it was not clear on why Governor Anies Baswedan talked about the Indonesian colonial age, considering that it does not have any correlation with the present-day.
