TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya will take actions related to the condition of sun bears at the Bandung Zoo in West Java.
Earlier, a video footage showing a skeletal sun bear begging for food from visitors went viral and sparked criticism among the public. A petition at Change.org was created to protest the Bandung Zoo for the devastating condition of the sun bear.
“We will hold a meeting on Monday to review the examination results and to decide actions to be taken. I will announce the decision after receiving a report from the team,” Minister Siti Nurbaya said in Jakarta on Friday, January 20, 2017.
As soon as the video footage went viral, Siti sent a team to check the condition of the sun bear at the Bandung Zoo, and collect necessary information to make the decision.
Minister Siti expressed her appreciation to Scorpion Foundation who initiated the petition.
“[The petition] has helped us to monitor the welfare of animals, particularly those living in zoos,” she added.
On Friday, January 20, 2017, the petition gained more than 35,000 supports and responses from the public, as well as local and international media.
