TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Researcher from Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta claimed that intolerance is getting stronger in the region. The recent rejection of Yulius Suharta, a Catholic District Head in Bantul, represents the severity of intolerance in Yogyakarta.
Samsul Maarif, a researcher from the Center for Religious dan Cultural Studies (CRCS) of Gadjah Mada University, said that cases of intolerance have reached an alarming level although Yogyakarta is previously known for its spirit of tolerance. Samsul set out another example of intolerance practice, which can be seen in the forced removal of Duta Wacana Christian University banners.
"Intolerance has spread, apparently [intolerant] groups attempt to infiltrate all aspects [of people's lives]," Samsul said to Tempo on Monday, January 16, 2017.
Samsul asserted that intolerant groups have gained much acknowledgment as the government decided to pay no attention towards them.
Samsul added that intolerance has been gaining more influence in Yogyakarta due to an intense public appearance of intolerant groups. "Certain groups have repeatedly displayed intolerant acts," Samsul said.
Samsul said that Yogyakarta has been known as a region that welcomes all types of people and groups. However, such condition has allowed intolerant groups to develop rapidly. According to Samsul, many sectarian groups have been established and intolerant groups will remain present.
Therefore, Samsul urged all regional heads to show their commitment to the spirit of unity in diversity and nationality.
