TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo believes that the upcoming rally on December 2, 2016, will not turn into a protest, but a joint prayer.
"There will be no protest. Who said it's going to be a protest? It's a joint prayer, not a protest," Presiden Jokowi said at the National Monument in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, November 29, 2016.
Reports said that a massive protest has been scheduled on December 2, 2016 to urge the National Police to arrest inactive Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama for allegedly committing religious blasphemy. Earlier, National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian said that the rally could be infiltrated by provocateurs.
The rumor faded as police initiated preventive measures, including arranging an agreement with Islamic Defender Front (FPI) leader Rizieq Shihab to turn the rally into a joint prayer in Monas from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM Western Indonesia Time. If Monas could not accommodate participants of the rally, they would be directed to Jalan Merdeka Selatan.
