TEMPO.CO, JBandung - An earthquake originated from the Indonesian southern ocean shook a number of regions in Yogyakarta and East Java this morning, Friday, November 11, at 07.26 Western Indonesian Times.

The earthquake with a 5.0 magnitude caused by subduction activities in earth’s plates. No tsunami potential reported.

Earthquake and Tsunami Mitigation Chief Daryono, from the Meteorological, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) explained that the epicenter of the earthquake is located at 9.19 south latitude and 111.31 east longitudes in the ocean.

“The distance is 113 kilometers southeast of Pacitan City, East Java, at the depth of 62 kilometers,” Daryono said on November 11, 2016.

Based on data from BMKG, Daryono said that the powerful earthquake was felt in Bantul, Imogiri, Playen, Wonosari, Pasirombo, Pacitan, Tamperan, Kebonagung, Ngadirojo, Panggul, Munjungan, Tulungagung, Donomulyo, and Karangkates. The intensity of the earthquake was at BMKG’s II scale or III according to MMI.

Based on the depth of the hypocenter, he said, the medium scaled earthquake was caused by subductions of the Indo-Australia plate sliding underneath the Eurasian plate.

BMKG has called on the people living in Bantul’s southern coast up to Southern Malang to stay calm since the quake has no tsunami potential.
