Police to Quiz Ahok on Monday over Blasphemy Allegations

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Police chief General Tito Karnavian said that investigators will question incumbent Jakarta gubernatorial candidate Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama on Monday, November 7, for alleged blasphemy, after he referred to surah al-Maidah, verse 51 of the Koran. Tito explained that police had already summoned witnesses.


On March 30, Ahok gave a speech in the Seribu Island, Jakarta, claiming that he had often been prejudiced by others over their interpretation of al-Maida, verse 51, which says that Muslim are not allowed to have Jews and Christian as rulers.


Earlier, Police deputy chief Comr. Gen. Syafruddin said police had met protesters’ demand on speedy resolution to Ahok’s blasphemy allegations.
