TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Depok administration deploys 1,800 sanitary personnel to keep the city clean and apprehend litterers.
Depok Sanitation and Parks Department head Eti Suryati said that Depok residents continue to litter, particularly by the roadside and rivers in Depok.
“Residents often litter in the morning before going to work,” she said on Monday, October 24, 2016.
Eti said that motorcycle riders often dump garbage at bridges into Depok rivers. Since the turn of the year, Depok has nabbed 43 Depok residents for littering.
People who are caught littering will have their identity card taken and sentenced for minor offense at Depok District Court. “Most of the litterers are Depok residents,” she said.
It is estimated that over 250 tons of garbage are dumped into random places. A total of 2.1 Depok residents produces 1,250 tons of waste per day, some 700-750 of which are dumped at Cipayung Sanitary Landfill.
Whereas 100-150 tons of waste are dumped and processed in 36 waste processing units in Depok. “Some of Depok’s waste are not yet accommodated and dumped illegally.”
