Indonesians Surviving Boat Incident in Malaysia to be Returned

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Consulate General in Johor Bahru Taufiqur Rijal confirmed that as many as 34 Indonesians who survived the boat incident on Saturday (23/7) would be returned to Indonesia on Monday (8/8).


According to him, those 34 Indonesians would be returned by ferry at 1 am and are expected to arrive in Tanjung Pinang, Indonesia, at 3 pm local tine.


"A team from the Indonesian Consulate General will accompany them,” he said to Tempo in a written statement on Friday (5/8).


Rijal added that the Consulate General would be temporarily handled by Tanjung Pinang Transmigration, Manpower and Social Affairs Agency before they are returned to their respective areas.


As previously reported, four Indonesians including three women died while 33 others were saved when their boat capsized at about 80 meters from the shores of Pantai Batu Layar, Kota Tinggi, Malaysia.


Kota Tinggi and Rescue Department (Bomba) operation commander Azlan Mohd Sobri said that three officers from the Bandar Penawar station were deployed to the scene after receiving a distress call at 11:07pm Saturday before a search and rescue operation was launched.


"Based on the information that we have, the boat had 37 passengers, all Indonesians, including 25 men and eight women," he said in a statement on Sunday.
