Surabaya Terrorist Arrest: Residents Asked to Remain Vigilant

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chief of Tanjung Perak Police Precinct Adj. Sr. Comr. Takdir Mattanete has called on Surabaya residents not to be afraid of terror threat. According to him, police have handled and thwarted the terrorist attack in Surabaya. “Residents have no need to worry [about terror attack], but [they] have to remain vigilant,” he said at Jalan Tambak Osonwilangun 1, Surabaya, Thursday, June 9, 2016.


Takdir has called on the residents to inform the police should they identify any suspicious activity in their neighborhood. “If they found suspicious activity in their neighborhood, [they] should immediately report it,” he said.


Meanwhile, police have stepped up security measures in a number of spot in East Java after the raid on the suspected terrorists residence and arrested them in three different locations in Surabaya, Wednesday, June 8, 2016. “The security measures are carried out by all departments, and not only in Surabaya,” said the head of East Java Police Public Relation Division Sr. Comr. Raden Argo Yuwono.


The enhanced security measures in East Java are also carried out to anticipate crimes during Ramadan and ahead of Eid al-Fitr 2016. “Patrols must continue; in fact, the frequency will be increased to provide security for residents,” he said.


Special anti-terror force Densus 88 of the National Police have arrested three suspected terrorist in three different locations in Surabaya, i.e. in Jalan Lebak Timur, Kalianak and Lebak Agung. “From the arrest, Densus 88 had confiscated home-assembled firearms of both handguns and rifles and homemade bomb ready for use,” he said.


The three suspected terrorists are identifed as Pur, Fn and Brn. “The case is being investigated by the National Police Headquarters, more information can be obtained there,” he said.
