TEMPO.CO, Bekasi - Unlike previous years, the Bekasi City administration issues no bans for its residents, particularly students, to celebrate the Valentine’s Day on February 14, 2016.

“Everyone has their own way to express love,” Bekasi Mayor Rahmat Effendi said on Saturday, February 13, 2016.

However, Rahmat warned those who celebrate the Valentine’s Day to keep it in order and not conduct amoral behaviors. Rahmat added that the Valentine’s Day should not be associated with negative conducts. Rahmat called on residents to express their love by positive activities.

“We will take action against any activities that violate religious values,” Rahmat added.

Ronny Hermawan, member of City Legislative Council’s Commission D, said that some people, particularly young people, would insist on celebrating the Valentine’s Day even if it was banned. Ronny called on those who celebrate the Valentine’s Day not to lose control.

The celebration of the Valentine’s Day has sparked pros and cons among people in the city. Some people think that the Valentine’s Day that it should be banned since it’s not eastern culture. Meanwhile, others think that the Valentine’s Day is not exclusive to those who are dating.
