TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President Jusuf Kalla called on the new Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board (PBNU) to contribute to country’s economic growth and improvement by educating public to be more productive.
“This is homework for the NU to give a good contribution to the country,” Kalla said at the Istiqlal Mosque, Central Jakarta, on Saturday, September 5.
Kalla added that NU should not only focus on salawat (prayers to Prophet Muhammad) and istigosah (mass prayers), but also to work with public. Kalla said that frequent salawat and istigosah without hard work would not significantly affect the country’s development.
“NU has approximately 85 million followers in Indonesia. It means the progress and setback of the people would depend on how to motivate them with a moderate Islamic education,” Kalla added.
Moreover, Kalla said, NU has already had higher education institutions, in addition to Islamic schools across the country.
“It’s time for NU to contribute the country’s development,” he said.
Kalla hopes that NU must motivate public to be more productive in agriculture, handicraft and industry sectors since the country needs to increase its productivity.
