TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Acting Secretary-General of the National Council of Special Economic Zones Susiwijono Moegiarso mentioned the investment realization for 20 special economic zones in Indonesia reached Rp177.5 trillion by the end of 2023, a Rp66 trillion hike compared to the previous year.
The KEKs also absorbed 117,492 workers from 331 companies. "The manpower realization increased by 57,005 people with an increase of 89 companies," he said during a working meeting on special economic zones on January 16-17, 2024.
According to Susiwijono, the special economic zone is targeting an Rp77.5 trillion increase in 2024 with an additional 38,277 manpower.
Susiwijono also explained that his office last year cooperated with the research agency of the Business Faculty of the Indonesia University, resulting in an impact study of special economic zones on local and national economies.
The study showed that in general, the zones are developing nicely and positively contributed to the economy during the 2019-2023 period.
The economic zones with fairly good performance are located in the Economic Growth Center area with anchored investors, good industry agglomeration level, high competitive investment, and a better-supporting infrastructure availability.
Meanwhile, manufacturing economic zones are said to have improved competitiveness if they manage or implement downstream natural resources. This will be supported by the significant development of tourism in special economic zones.
In conclusion, Susiwijono cited the study, that investment in special economic zones is positively contributing to an upward trend in local and national economies.
Meanwhile, to boost the performance, the National Council of Special Economic Zones will evaluate and coordinate with local government and relevant ministries to ensure the development is right on track.
