TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Cooperative, Small and Medium Enterprises Ministry supported Silungkang songket (traditional cloth) from Sawahlunto, West Sumtera, to be included in the UNESCO’s world heritage list.
“The government is making endeavors so that the songket cloth can be included in the UNESCO’s world heritage list, following batik,” Emilia Suhaimi, the deputy of marketing and business network at the Cooperative, Small and Medium Enterprises Ministry said on Saturday, August 29.
According to Emilia, the ministry has fully supported efforts to preserve Silungkang songket to develop small and medium enterprises in Sawahlunto.
“Songket [promotion] will be launched to follow batik in October in Palembang,” Emilia added.
Emilia explained that the ministry was ready to promote Silungkang songket to a wider market. The songket cloth, Emilia said, must be integrated with the fashion business to adapt with the trend.
“Fashion network Shafira has been considering to feature songket in Paris and New York,” she said.
The ministry is also ready to promote songket for small and medium enterprises in Sawahlunto to both domestic and overseas markets.
