Jimly Asshiddiqie Refuses Death Penalty for Corruptors

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jimly Asshiddiqie, one of the candidates for the Chief of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) stated his disagreement on applying death penalty for corruptors. Jimly asserted that Indonesia should adhere to the norms and values stated in the Pancasila and follow global standard.


"Capital punishment should be reduced, not increased," Jimly said during his interview with the KPK leader selection committee at the State Secretariat in Jakarta on Tuesday, August 25, 2015.


Jimly said that it is better to strip corruptors off of their assets rather than charging them with capital punishment.


Jimly admitted that he had rendered several capital punishments to criminals when serving as the Head of the Constitutional Court. However, he explained that not all of the decisions were unanimous, because there are those who had dissenting opinions.
