Police Name Three Suspects over Alleged Dwelling Time Bribery

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Tito Karnavian said that his institution has named three suspects in an alleged bribery case related to the lengthy dwelling time at Tanjung Priok port.


"A broker and two officials from the Trade ministry [have been named as suspects]," Tito said at his office on Wednesday, July 29, 2015.


Tito explained that the Polic ehas named the three individuals as suspects after conducting probes and searches at the Trade Ministry, and managed to confiscate US$42,000, SG$4,000 and a number of documents.


According to Tito, six other individuals have been taken to the Jakarta Police headquarter for questionings.


Jakarta Police's General Crime Director Jaya Krishna Murti revealed that the three suspects: a high-ranking official at one of Trade Ministry's sub-directorate, who is currently in Canada; an importer who served as a broker; and a freelancer at the Trade Ministry.


Prior to the search, Krishna added, the broker had been named as a suspect.


"We caught him with US$10,000 in his pocket," Krishna added.


Earlier, the lengthy dwelling time case at Tanjung Priok port was exposed when President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo conducted an official visit to the largest port in Indonesia. Jokowi was furious over the issue and threatened to remove relevant officials and ministers.
