5.1 Magnitude Quake Jolts Padang

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter Scale shook the West Sumatra’s capital of Padang on Sunday, April 26, 2015 at around 7:55 p.m. local time.
According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency of Padang Panjang, the tremor took place at 1.75 south latitude and 100.26 east longitude, some 62 km off the South Coast.
“It occurred at a depth of 10 km, without tsunami potential,” Buha, the Padang Panjang BMKG information and data head, told Tempo on Sunday.
He added the quake was felt in a number of areas in the province, including Padang Panjang, South Solok, Painan, Siberut and Padang.
Ade Edward, the head of the Indonesian Geologist Association of West Sumatra branch, said the quake’s epicenter was adjacent to the one in 2007.
