TEMPO.CO, Jakarta- State airport operator Angkasa Pura I (AP I) overseeing airports in the country’s central and eastern parts is beefing up security in the wake of a security breach incident at Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport in Pekanbaru, Riau.
“Although it is not under our operational territory, this incident has become our concern,” AP I corporate communication head Handy Heryudhitiawan told Tempo on Thursday, April 9, 2015.
A man identified as Mario Steven Ambarita breached Tuesday into the runway of the airport, which was managed by Angkasa Pura II (AP II). He then hid in the wheel well of a Garuda Indonesia airliner flying to Jakarta.
Handy said his company had stepped up security measures in the runways of the airports under AP I’s management, adding that several AP I airports had been equipped with multi-layered security facilities.
“In Bali and Ujungpandang, there are two layers of fences around the airports, so it will be difficult to penetrate them,” he said.
