TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Taufik Kurniawan, Deputy Chief of the House of Representatives from the National Mandate Party (PAN) Faction, rejects the notion of remission for corruptors. Taufik said that the government needs to provide deterrent effect towards corruptors.

"[I] reject remission [for corruptors]. Corruption has reached regional levels and it has turned into a massive crime," said Taufik.

Plans to allow remission for corruptors emerged based on the suggestion made by Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly. Yasonna argued that denying corruptors of remission is against Law No. 12/1995 on Penitentiary, which states that all convicts deserve remission and parole.

Taufik however, insisted that the government needs to see corruption in an equal ground with terrorism and narcotics. "Therefore, corruptors do not deserve remission," Taufik said.
