TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Aboe Bakar Alhabsyi, a politician from the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) and a member of the House of Representatives’ Commission III overseeing legal affairs, said that his faction could use its political right if President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo canceled the inauguration of Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan as the new National Police chief.

“Based on the procedures, President [Jokowi] must inaugurate Budi Gunawan,” Aboe said on Friday, February 13, 2015.

According to Aboe, his faction has yet to decide whether it would exercise its interpellation right or inquiry right. Aboe said that the final decision would be made following Jokowi’s official announcement on the matter.

Furthermore, Aboe asserted that there would be no reason for Jokowi to scrap Budi Gunawan’s inaguration since Budi had passed the fit and proper test conducted at the House. As stated by the law, he added, the president must inaugurate the National Police chief candidate approved by the house.

Jokowi was scheduled to announce the cancellation on Friday, February 13, 2015, following KPK’s decision to name Budi as a graft suspect. Jokowi is also reportedly screening several names to be proposed as new police chief candidates to the House.
