TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bank Indonesia (BI) has set to keep the cash resisters ringing with Rp88 trillion in extra cash to meet an increase in demand for money during this year’s New Year holiday.
"We have prepared Rp88 trillion for New Year holiday,” said Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia Ronald Waas in Padang, West Sumatra.
According to Ronald, the demand for money during Christmas and New Year holidays has increased every year. During this period, the people are on long vacation.
"Every year, there’s an increase of around 18 percent,” he said, adding that usually only 90 percent of the money provided were used.
"In 2013, only around Rp76 trillion was used,” he said.
Ronald said that the extra money has been distributed to BI offices all over Indonesia. He also asked the people to stay alert of counterfeit money every time.
"There’s no correlation between the circulation of counterfeit money with Christmas and New Year,” he said.
However, Ronald said that BI has continued to disseminate information about the authentic Rupiah and said that BI is also cooperating with the national police,” he said.
