TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - East Java Governor Soekarwo met with PT Freeport Indonesia director Rozik Boedioro Soetjipto on Tuesday to discuss Freeport’s plan to build smelter in Gresik, East Java. “They asked about the licensing process,” said Soekarwo.
According to Soekarwo, Freeport mostly uses copper to work the smelter. “That’s why we fully support the development of smelter,” said Soekarwo, adding that he will also provide guarantees for foreign investors investing in East Java.
The guarantees include ease of licensing process which is targeted to be completed in 14 days. “License will be given as long as there are environmental impact analysis documents (amdal),” said Soekarwo.
Soekarwo will also support infrastructure development and asked that the construction plan to be given soon so that the government could form a team to asses.
Rozik said the smelter had production capacity of 1.8 million tons of copper concentrate per year. They need 80-hectare land for the smelter. Rozik promised that he would make selection for the smelter’s basic design and the amdal soon.
