TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Yogyakarta is hosting the international bonsai festival from October 18 to 21. The event entitled ‘Bonsai, Art and Culture Biennale (IBACB)’ is the first to be held in Indonesia with 20 participating countries.

“Up to date, there are 215 foreign guests confirmed their attendance, including masters of bonsai from all over the world,” said IBACB chief of Culture Section, Didik Irawan to Tempo.

The festival is being held in three locations inlcuding Vredeburg fort, Yogya Palace’s Srimanganti Hall and Society Building in Cultural Park. Didik is hopeful that the festival will promote Indonesia as the center of bonsai art like China and Japan.

As many as 12 masters of Bonsai were demonstrating their skill on the second day. Visitors can learn the new data-style of growing bonsai including how to cut, bent, and treat the bonsai.

Didik is ambitious to settle new perspective of bonsai art. That is not only seeing the bonsai as a plant that grow in a pot.

“But to see bonsai as a unity of space, art, and culture that live surrounds it,” Didik explained.
