TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Around 60 percent out of the 4.4 million Indonesians living abroad up to September 2014 are migrant workers (TKI), said Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa during a meeting with Commission I of the House of Representatives (DPR) in Jakarta on Wednesday, September 17, 2014.
"If we do the maths, there are 2.6 million Indonesians living abroad who are directly contributing to our foreign exchange reserves," said Marty.
Assuming the runner-up position are students, who account for around 20 percent or 900,000 of all Indonesians living abroad.
"Indonesians who work abroad as professionals account for eight percent," continued Marty.
In fourth place with six percent, are Indonesian ship crews, who work in cruise ships, ocean liners and/or tankers.
Marty also noted that 0.28 percent of Indonesians living abroad are implicated in an ongoing legal cases, the majority of which are involved in drug-related cases.
