TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has condemned the "heinous and cowardly" murder of British aid worker David Haines by the hardline rebel group, Islamic State (IS), which previously went by the name of Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
“The crime is a tragic reminder over the increasing dangers that humanitarian workers face on a daily basis in Syria,” said UNSC through a statement that was unanimously passed by all 15 of its members on Sunday, according to AFP reports.
They called for the protection of aid workers in the conflict zones and reiterated that ISIS should be defeated, and there was no tolerance for the violence and hatred that it espoused.
Members of the UNSC also reaffirmed that the barbaric crimes committed by ISIS, which is also known as Islamic State of Iraq and Levant, or ISIL), did not intimidate them, but instead cemented their will to commit to a collective effort to fight ISIS and their affiliated rebel groups.
The UNSC called for the immediate and unconditional release of all the hostages held by IS and al-Qaeda affiliated groups, and asked all nations to effectively cooperate with the United Kingdom’s (UK) efforts to bring Haines’ executioner to justice.
Haines was kidnapped in Syria in March 2013. Haines’ beheading was revealed in a video that was released on Saturday by ISIS rebels. In the last couple of months, ISIS forces have succesfully managed to take control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria.
