Police Deploy Hundreds to Conflict-torn Lembata

TEMPO.CO, Kupang – The East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Police have deployed a company-level unit (SSK) of Mobile Brigade (Brimob) personnel and a platoon of Sabhara (quick-response unit) policemen (Sabhara) from East Flores regency to cope with the recent clash between residents of two villages in Wulandoni district, Lembata regency.
“We have dispatched personnel from Sabhara and Brimob from Sikka and East Flores to back-up the security in Lembata,” NTT Police public relations chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Okto Riwu told Tempo on Monday, August 18, 2014.
Okto said the personnel were now still on guard around the location of the fight, which left a resident killed and hundreds of others displaced. “The location has become more conducive,” he said.
He said the police had yet to nab those involved in the clash as policemen were still continuing its operations to restore order in the areas. “We are still having operations in the two villages,” he said.
Lembata Deputy Regent Viktor Mado Watun, meanwhile, said the clash had damaged scores of houses and hundreds of villagers had been displaced. “Some 500 resident have evacuated to neighboring villages,” he said.
