JAT Chief Pledges Allegiance to ISIS in Syria

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Boy Rafli Amar said that radical Islamic group Jamaah Ansharut Tauhid (JAT) leader Afif Abdul Majid had been involved in the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria's (ISIS) activities since 2013. “The suspect has been active in the ISIS since the end of 2013 after he swore his allegiance in Syria,” he said when contacted by Tempo, Sunday, August 10.


He said Atif went to Syria to go through the process of allegiance alone, it is said that he visited the country as the representative of Indonesian ISIS. “Atif pledged his oath of allegiance to Abu Hisyam who represented ISIS leader Abu Bakar al-Baghdadi," he explained.


Previously on Saturday evening, August 9, the National Police's Special Detachment (Densus) 88 counter-terrorism unit arrested Atif in Jatiasih, Bekasi. The suspect was arrested when he was visiting his relative in Bekasi.


Boy said that so far, the police are still investigating Atif. The investigation is conduced to find further information on the emergence of ISIS in Indonesia. “He is still being questioned and secured at the National Police's headquarter,” he uttered. Atif has been named as suspect who is involved in funding terrorism and his support to the ISIS.
