KPPI Investigates Rocketing Paper Imports

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Trade Safeguard Committee (KPPI) will hold a hearing on July 25, 2014 to investigate the recent surge in paper imports, according to KPPI chairman Ernawati in a press release received on Monday, July 14, 2014.
Ernawati said the hearing would become an opportunity for all related parties to present strong evidence and opinions. "They can also state their responses related to KPPI investigation results," she said.
The investigation, which was initiated as an act to safeguard the national trade, began following reports that imported paper goods and cardboards had skyrocketed. Data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) revealed paper imports reached 22,166 tons in 2010, and continued to increase to 33,456 tons and 51,356 tons in 2011 and 2012, respectively.
In 2013, paper imports soared to 73,869, with 29.7 percent stemming from China. South Korea accounted for 19.1 percent, while Japan and Finland shipped 19.9 percent and 9.5 percent of the paper. The rest came from Sweden (7.9 percent), Germany (6.2 percent) and the United States (5.8 percent).
