TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Industry Minister M.S. Hidayat projected that exports of completely-built-up (CBU) cars would exceed 200,000, up from 170,000 in 2013 and 125,000 in 2012. Based on these figures, Hidayat said that the national automotive industry was improving although it was still behind Thailand’s.

"It is reflected by CBU exports to more than 80 countries," Hidayat said on Monday, June 23, 2014.

In addition to CBUs, Indonesia also exported 100,000 completely-knocked-down (CKD) cars in 2012, 105,000 units in 2013. This year’s figure, meanwhile, was expected to rise to 110,000 units.

Data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Manufacturers (Gaikindo) revealed that the nation’s car production, sales and exports had been growing since January to April 2014. Compared to the same period of last year, the production increased by 18 percent to 461,059 units while sales rose by nine percent to 435,382 units.

In addition, CBU exports in the year’s first quarter soared by 14 percent to 65,088 units, while CBU imports were plummeted by 37 percent to 37,843 units.
