TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo (Jokowi) asked Jakarta Dept. of Education to evaluate school hours. The Governor opined that the start of school hours in Jakarta is too early, as reported by Antara News.
"School hours in Jakarta starts at 6:30 am. It's too early," Jokowi said at City Hall.
According to Jokowi, the school hours will be rescheduled if there is complain from the students. "But it will be continued if students are comfortable with this," he added.
The implementation of this policy was applied by previous governor and vice Fauzi Bowo-Prijanto in 2009 to reduce traffic jam between 6 to 14 percent.
The change of this policy was firstly uttered by Jakarta Deputy Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok). Basuki advised that students should go to school at 9 am and go home in the afternoon. At this moment, the students are going home at 2 pm.
Ahok assessed that Jakarta will be free from traffic jam on holiday. Changing the school hours will not give effect for reducing traffic jam.
