Jakarta to Conduct ERP Trial

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Transportation Agency chief Muhammad Akbar said there would be a trial for Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) in the next two months.
"ERP providers are ready," Akbar told Tempo on Sunday. The providers have conducted surveys to install gates and picks vehicles to become volunteers.
According to Akbar, this trial will show how effective the ERP is in reducing lessening the use of vehicles. "We conduct monitoring on volunteers. We will see whether this is effective or not," he said.
Akbar said there are already five foreign providers interested in this program. "One of them is from Sweden," he said. The others are from Norway and Japan.
ERP system is the Jakarta Provincial Government's effort to reduce the use of private vehicles, which will be imposed tariff when entering specific roads. This is done to convince people that using private vehicles is more expensive than using public transportation.
Akbar could not be sure when the real ERP would be installed and only said this policy would keep going forward. "I have formed a team to expedite ERP implementation," he said.
