TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A day after the Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo's (Jokowi) declaration for his presidential run from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), hundreds of labors under ten organizations in North Sumatra have declared their support for Jokowi. The labors declared their support in Medan on Saturday.
The support for Jokowi was spontaneously initiated after the news about Jokowi's presidential run.
"After Jokowi was officially supported by PDI-P, we gathered to show our support for Jokowi, yesterday," said Minggu Saragih, The Chief of The Indonesian Metal Worker Federation. "We believe that when Jokowi becomes the President, the proper labor wage will be his main concern."
To facilitate their communication in supporting Jokowi for president, the labors agreed to form an alliance called the Alliance of Independent People. The spokesman of the alliance, Arsula Gultom, said that yesterday's declaration was not properly planned.
"Some of the labors were still working. We sneaked out to participate in the declaration," said Gultom.
To further express North Sumatran labors' favor for Jokowi, Gultom revealed the plan on inviting Jokowi on the May Day commemoration on the first of May in Medan.
