Genital Survey Violates Children's Right to Privacy: Komnas Anak

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Commission on Child Protection (Komnas Anak) said the health survey comprising genital inquiries that a junior high school in Sabang, Aceh, handed out to its students recently was against the students’ right to privacy.
The commission had appealed to the Health Ministry to immediately withdraw the contentious health questionnaire. “That survey has injured the rights of Indonesian children. I don’t see any connection between the size of the students’ penises or breasts and their rights for education,” commission spokesperson Arist Merdeka Sirait told Tempo on Sunday, September 8, 2013.
Aris said the survey’s questioning the size of the students’ genitals was violating their privacy. “What’s the purpose of this? Did they want to say that a student with sub-standard genital size must receive medication? This is horrible,” Arist said.
He also said the survey was against the society’s religious norms, thus should not be distributed to youngsters. “Whatever methods the survey adopted, this genital questionnaires must not be given to children.”
Previously, seventh graders of a junior high school in Sabang, Aceh, were required to fill out a health form whose questions, among others, asked about the size of their’ breasts and genitals.
