TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Charta Politica Indonesia research director Yunarto Wijaya said Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo a.k.a. Jokowi had the greatest chance in securing the nation’s top seat in the 2014 presidential race.
“He has the best trend now. If there’s no significant development, he will be unstoppable,” he said on Monday, August 26, 2013. However, he said the nomination of the Jakarta governor as presidential hopeful would indeed rely on the hands of his party, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P).
Previously, chairperson of the PDI-P central executive board Puan Maharani said the party had yet to name a candidate for the presidential bid. PDI-P chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri, she said, was the one to announce the candidate.
Puan has called on the public not to always associate the governor with next year’s presidential nomination. She said there were other potential candidates in the party besides the governor, including newly-installed Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo, East Kalimantan Governor Teras Narang, and West Kalimantan Governor Cornelius Lay.
