Chevron Bioremediation Contractor Sentenced to 6 Years

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - PT Sumigita Jaya director, Herland bin Ompo, has been found guilty of corruption and sentenced to six years in prison and fined Rp 250 million (around US$ 25,000) or an additional three months in prison. PT Sumigita Jaya was the bioremediation contractor for PT Chevron Pacific Indonesia.
Herland’s company, Sumigita Jaya, was also ordered to pay an additional fine of Rp 66.9 billion (US$ 6.9 million). If the fine is not paid out in one month, the company’s assets will be auctioned off.
The judges accused Herland of knowing that Sumigita was not qualified as a bioremediation waste management company. Sumigita also did not have a license for toxic waste management from a responsible institution.
Herland claimed he would appeal the verdict to a higher court and report this case, which he considers to have no legal grounds, to the Constitutional Court. "We will continue to fight this to the end of the earth," he said after the trial.
