TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Police announced that it has officially stopped its evacuation efforts after the KM Lestari Maju capsized on the waters of Selayar Islands.
“The last victim that we evacuated was the ship’s Captain, Agus Susanto,” said Selayar Police Chief Adj. Grand Comm. Syamsu Ridwan on earlier this morning.
According to Syamsu, the 139 survivors of the capsized ferry ship have been entirely evacuated to the nearby location and up to 01:54 local time, 29 people lost their lives to the incident.
The survivors were all given medical treatment in three different locations, 34 were sent to the KH. Hayyung Selayar Hospital, 53 were treated at the Parangia health center (Puskesmas), and 43 are being treated at the Batangmatan puskesmas.
“We will continue our efforts to look for victims that might have possibly been dragged by the current or may have drowned,” said Syamsu.
The KM Lestari Maju left Bira Harbor in the Bulukumba District for the Pamamata Harbor at 10:00 central Indonesia time (WITA). But around 13:30 WITA, the ferry ship experienced a fatal leakage and slowly began sinking while it was sailing on the waters of Pa'baddilan in Selayar District.
Videos that spread online recorded the hectic moment when passengers of KM Lestari Maju were putting on life jackets just before the ship sank. However, there were reportedly passengers that jumped into sea without life jackets.
