TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Communication and Information Ministry (Kominfo) has dismissed rumors that the government's mandatory prepaid SIM card registration program would make users prone to a data breach.
Commenting on the issue, Kominfo Minister Rudiantara explained data breaches could stem from various factors.
“That could happen. ID card number (NIK) and family card (KK) numbers are widely available on the internet when you google them. And those [numbers] existed before the mandatory registration began,” said Rudiantara on Monday, March 5. “The public’s awareness regarding security must be improved.”

According to Rudiantara, people’s lack of awareness on security aspects was evident in the majority of people who did not routinely change their email passwords or ATM PINs.
Commenting on the rumored security breach of customers' data encontered by his ministry, Rudiantara said it was basically false.
“We are authorized to match users’ NIKs and KKs with the database at the ministry's Population and Civil Registration Agency (Dukcapil). It is just a confirmation process,” Rudiantara assured.
