TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A surgical oncology specialist Dr. M. Yadi Permana, Sp. B (K) Onk explained about the things that can increase the risk of breast cancer during a seminar on cancer held on January 29, in Jakarta.

Here are the three things that may have slipped from your attention that can actually increase the risk of breast cancer.

1. Food that contains carbohydrates

This doesn’t necessarily mean that you must completely avoid foods that contain carbohydrate, but you must pay more attention and limit your carbohydrate consumption. The carbohydrates entering our system can turn into fat cells which is the door towards obesity if it’s not maintained properly. Obesity is also one of the risk factors for cancer.

2. Overcooked and burnt foods

Do you enjoy the crispiness of the burnt outer layer of your barbequed food? Well, that burnt part contains quinone and benzopyrene compounds and free radical substances that can stimulate the growth of cancer.

3. Alcohol

The World Health Organization (WHO) included alcohol as carcinogens that can spark the growth of cancer. Habitual alcohol consumption can increase 5 percent risk of forming cancer cells, especially for females. It is mainly because alcohol consumption increases the estrogen hormone, and excess estrogen hormones can increase the chance of breast cancer.
