TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Several airliners publicly stated the difficulties of hiring new pilots. They revealed it is mainly caused by the lack of competence to comply with an airline qualification standard.
Lion Air Director of Operations Daniel Putut said that Lion Air Group’s need for new pilots each year can reach up to 150-300 pilots.
“We opened an acceptance quota of 150 pilots from the 300 that enlisted. From the 150 people, there were merely two people that passed accordingly. This is when the candidate’s interview, psychology test, and English test scored over 75,” said Daniel.
He said that pilots must be competent in the knowledge of aviation and English skills proven by a 700 scoring TOEIC certificate. “More than 200 applicants score below 75.”
In 2017, Daniel said that Lion Air Group needed 300 new pilots but could only manage to fill 55 positions.
President Director of Citilink Indonesia Juliandra Nurtjahjo said that the failure rate of pilot candidates in his airline is very high. However, he claims that the company will not take it easy since it is for the safety of the passengers.
