TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Deputy Governor Sandiaga Uno asserted his commitment to eradicating the acts of illegal levying and solving the often chaotic situation that occurs in the Tanah Abang area.
It was his first ever visit after the latest rule was implied, which partially closed-off half of the public road to make temporary space for street vendors.
“We already said that there must not be any illegal levying anymore, and we will take tough actions against it,” said Sandiaga in front of the Tanah Abang station on Tuesday, December 26.
The Jatibaru Raya is closed from 08:00-18:00 every day. Throughout those ten hours, street vendors are permitted by the Jakarta provincial government to be used as a temporary makeshift market. During this time, vehicles are forbidden to travel through Jatibaru Raya street.
According to Sandiaga, he will impose sanctions towards anyone who is proven to conduct any types of extortion, including illegal levies. Although, Sandiaga was not specific in what kind of sanction he will impose.
Sandiaga Uno promised to install CCTVs throughout the corners of the Jatibaru Raya street to strengthen the government’s monitoring abilities. “There are no CCTVs here, we will install them.”
